Agronomic Use

High calcium ag lime (different than dolomitic lime, hydrated lime, or quicklime) is used to increase soil pH. It also provides available calcium to plants.

Powdered high calcium ag lime is calcium carbonate. The small particle size results in a fast reaction time, increasing soil pH faster than a pelletized product.

The application rate depends on whether you're amending topsoil or a peat-based media. In topsoil, the rate depends on the pH and CEC.

Ag lime is the fastest and most powerful pH increasing product, but should be supplemented with oyster shell flour or wollastonite in systems where water or feed products are putting ongoing downward pressure on the pH. These slower-acting products give the soil more pH buffering capacity to minimize abrupt pH swings.

Powdered ag lime can also be used to increase the pH of water. However, it's easiest to apply the lime to the soil and let the soil buffer the water pH naturally.
