Bone meal is used primarily as a phosphorus amendment. Bone meals have the highest available phosphorus of any dry amendment besides guanos.

Bone meal also contributes nitrogen and calcium as it mineralizes. The calcium in bone meal helps buffer soil pH drops.

While fish bone meal has a slightly higher quantity of phosphorus than bone meal, there is less sodium in bone meal, making it a preferrable phosphorus amendment when trying to keep sodium levels down.
