Crustacean/crab meal is used as a soil amendment for nitrogen, calcium, and micronutrients. Crustacean meal will put light upward pressure on your soil pH due to the carbonates in the crustacean shells.

Crustacean meal is a great source of chitin, which is converted to chitenase by microbes. Chitenase has been found to induce an immune response in the plant.
