Like bone meal, fish bone meal is used primarily as a source of phosphorus. It also contains significant nitrogen and micronutrients. Therefore, it should only be used when a soil needs both phosphorus and nitrogen.

Fish bone meal has a preferrable specrum of micronturients and trace minerals due to it's oceanic orgins. However, it also contains higher levels of sodium and should be used in moderation to avoid sodium build-up in the soil.
