Agronomic Use

Compost is used to build all soil properties simultaneously. It contributes slow-releasing nutrients, builds soil structure, and feeds microbial life. In peat-based living soils, it is an essential input in order to re-use the soil over-and-over again.

The nutrient contribution of compost depends completely on the feedstocks used to make the compost, the water quality used in the composting process, and the age of the compost. An aged compost with a lower C:N is generally preferrable. A C:N greater than ~18:1 can immobilize nitrogen and create nitrogen deficiency.

This compost is made from fish byproducts and woody biomass (ex: rhododendron leaves, pine needles, fir branches). It's thermally composted before being aged for an additional 12-24 months. This creates a compost with high fungal populations, a low C:N, and abundant nutrients (nitrogen, calcium, and micronutrients in particular). 162 different species were positively identified in this compost using genomics.

This is an ideal compost for compost tea. 90% of the compost can go through a tea bag. The huge surface area of the compost also increases the nutrient release rate.

Each batch of compost is screened for Clopyralid herbicides.
