Agronomic Use

Granular poultry is poultry manure that is processed into easily spreadable dry granules. It's a fairly "balanced fertilizer", providing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sulfur, magnesium, and micronutrients in significant quantities. Most growers apply it to fulfill their nitrogen requirement and get all the other nutrients as a "bonus".


Granular poultry is our top recommendation for outdoor topsoil production due to it's low cost (per unit of nutrient) and ease of use.


Not all granular poultry products are created equal due what the chickens eat and how their manure is processed. Layer chicken manure is preferrable due to high levels of available calcium.


Through years of experimentation, we've determined that "Perfect Blend" is the best source of granular poultry. Perfect Blend dries and granulates layer chicken manure very quickly, minimizing nitrogen loss in the process. They add a bit of citric acid in the process.


The product releases ammonium and reaches an equal ammonium to nitrate ratio weeks after applied. Eventually it all mineralizes to nitrate in a nice smooth release rate through the season. Anecdotally, it also seems to perform better than other products in field trials, likely due to it's lower salt index. It can be used at lower rates than other granular poultry products (we usually recommend no more than 2,000 lbs/acre pre-plant, and the remaining side-dressed mid-season.)


For better or worse, it smells like shit. Worse than most granular poultry products. Many grower's say "that's better!", and we agree.
